The National Institute of Technology, Srinagar is considered one of the premier technology institutes in North India. It was established in 1960 as Regional Engineering College and is one among eighteen such institutes sponsored by the Government of India. The REC was converted into a fully autonomous NIT in August 2003 and an institute of national importance for pursuing education, training and research in Engineering and Science. Apart from the BTech and MTech courses, NIT Srinagar offers MSc, MBA and PhD programmes across various specialisations.
