Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) was started in the year 1956, was upgraded in 1964 as a Regional Postgraduate Centre and it was declared as an Institution of National Importance in 2008 through an Act of Parliament. It was affiliated to University of Madras initially and later to Pondicherry University. From July 2008 the Institute has become an autonomous institute.
JIPMER Puducherry offers MBBS at UG, MD/ MS at PG level and DM/ MCh at the super-speciality level. At the doctorate level, the institute also offers a PhD programme and fellowship courses. Apart from this, JIPMER Puducherry offers several other programmes dedicated to the field of Medical and Health Sciences, such as BSc (Nursing), MSc (Nursing), BSc (Allied Health Sciences) and MSc (Allied Health Sciences) and MPH.
